Design Technology Project Success

Year 7 students making Block Bots in Design Technology

Year 7 Design Technology students have been putting the finishing touches to the Blox Bots they’ve designed and made as part of the Resistant Materials section of the course.

The project has helped them to develop essential skills, including health and safety in the workshop and how to use a range of hand and power tools.

Before getting hands on, the students researched ideas and created mind maps to plan their designs. They mastered isometric drawing skills and designing on paper, as well as computer aided design (CAD).

Marking out and measuring accurately was key and then it was time to reach for the tools, as students were taught to use a steel rule, try square, Tenon saw, pillar drill and cutting dowel.

Finally, the students brought their Blox Bots to life, by colouring and shading, and adding hair, eyes, ears and noses using scrap material.

I thought the project was amazing. I was able to use a drill and a saw, and I feel confident that if I had to use one again I could. The thing is, a saw doesn’t always go the way you want it to.
