National Lottery Funding for Careers Programme

Bridgnorth Endowed School has received a boost to its careers provision after securing £10,000 of National Lottery funding to run a year-long Higher Education Awareness Programme for its students and the local community.

The school has teamed up with Bridgnorth-based UniTasterDays Ltd to create a series of interactive university workshops and visit opportunities to help students thinking about their future careers to make informed decisions.

Facilitated by UniTasterDays, the workshops are designed to raise aspirations and help students from all year groups to fully understand specific aspects of higher education, including the importance of GCSE and post-16 choices, student finance and the UCAS application process.

In addition to this work with students, a range of events will be rolled out to parents and the local community to ensure they also have access to key information on higher education.

UniTasterDays Director, Jon Cheek, is an ex-student of Bridgnorth Endowed School who launched the award-winning resource for schools and colleges in 2012, following a successful career with three Midlands universities.

Jon comments: “University remains an excellent career choice for many people, so it’s important to provide as much high-quality information as early as possible.”

“The latest labour market statistics highlight the benefits of university participation; average earnings for a university graduate were shown to be £10,000 a year higher than a non-graduate, combined with considerably higher rates of future employment.”

“I’m excited to be back at Bridgnorth Endowed School, which prepared me fantastically for my own career, and I look forward to showing that university is accessible to all.”

The new workshop series has just been launched to Bridgnorth Endowed School students and community events are planned for later in the year.
