Students Given Behind the Scenes Tour of Amazon Warehouse

Year 10 computer science students at Amazon’s fulfilment centre in Rugeley

A group of Year 10s got the chance to find out exactly what happens after you click ‘buy’ on Amazon.co.uk, during a school trip to an Amazon fulfilment centre in Rugeley on Monday.

The aim of the visit was to provide the students, who are studying GCSE computer science, with invaluable insight into how IT systems are used to distribute products quickly and efficiently.

As one of the largest online retailers, Amazon invests in the very latest cutting-edge technology and innovation to facilitate its successful multi-billion dollar e-commerce business.

Amazon Rugeley is one of the company’s 21 UK fulfilment centres and is responsible for receiving, stowing, picking, packing and shipping millions of packages to all corners of the country every single week.

The tour took around 90 minutes and students were shown some of the most advanced technology in action, including state-of-the-art scanning equipment used to identify items and the sophisticated programming that’s behind the automated warehouse system.

IT teacher, Mr Akhtar, said: “It was a fantastic trip that gave students the opportunity to see first-hand how computer systems are used in an environment that they’re familiar with.”

“They were also able gain some understanding of the IT concepts and hurdles that had to be overcome in order to keep operations running smoothly.”
