Live Music Performance Delivers Mental Health Message

Year 9 and 10 pupils were given a PSHE lesson with a difference when singer-songwriter Ryan Lawrie visited the school to give a live performance and Q&A session on mental health, body image and LGBTQ+ last Thursday.

Ryan, also known as KOOLKID, made his name on the X Factor reality TV show in 2016 when he finished in sixth place under the guidance of ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.

Since then, the Glasgow-based artist has been writing songs for huge global acts such as South Korean boyband BTS and performing his own modern pop ballads, with news that he’ll be supporting a major artist on tour later this year.

Despite his success, Ryan has had personal struggles with body image and mental health, so was able to share his experiences and deliver a positive message to other young people.

PSHE Coordinator, Mrs Taylor, said: “We recognise the impact these troubling times may have had on our pupils, especially on their mental health, therefore we wanted to offer something that could lift spirits, entertain and ultimately educate them on these sensitive subjects.”

“It was fantastic to see our pupils enjoying some live music. Ryan was brilliant and the message he gave to pupils on the importance of looking after yourself physically and mentally was poignant.”
