Year 7 Boys Reach President’s Trophy Final

Year 7 boys celebrating their place in the Shropshire Schools and Colleges final

The Year 7 boys followed in the style of giant-killers Grimsby Town by defeating Meole Brace away in the semi-final played on Monday night.

Bridgnorth took the lead when Harrison Hakeman pounced on a defensive error and his long-range effort was too hard to handle.

The team continued to battle against the stronger Meole, who possessed a long throw attack, but Bridgnorth continued to defend well.

James Axon pulled off some amazing saves to keep the rivals out and relied on the bar and post on several occasions to continue to frustrate them.

As the game progressed, an excellent through ball from Thomas Szymanski turned the Meole defence, which saw Harrison Hakeman being fouled and resulted in a penalty that was swiftly dispatched by Noah Clayworth.

Meole did get one back, but James Axon continued to pull off the saves to send Bridgnorth into the next round.

Mr Chase said of the victory: “We were there to give a good account of ourselves, but knew it was a tough task. Meole is a school twice the size of ours so the pool of players they can select from is much larger. Credit to the boys who have worked really hard all year and deserve their moment in the final.”
