Students Get a Taste of New Football BTEC

Year 10 and 11 BES students taking part in the practical skills session on Monday

A brand-new Level 3 BTEC in Football and Education, launched by Shrewsbury Colleges Group and Shrewsbury Town Football Club, was showcased to Year 10 and 11 students in school on Monday.

The team delivered a one-hour taster course to a mix of 22 boys and girls who had expressed an interest in this as a possible pathway after their GCSEs.

The session began with a short presentation about the two-year programme, including the course units, entry requirements, career progression and how to apply.

Following on from the presentation, the group took part in a skills session on the AstroTurf to get a sense of a typical practical lesson on the new BTEC.

Equivalent to three A Levels, the course promises a minimum of six hours of practical training a week plus coursework that covers key areas such as sports leadership, sports psychology and coaching.

Careers Lead, Miss Edwards, said: “A big thank you to Katie Edwards, and Megan and Will Potts from Shrewsbury Town for taking the time to come into school to meet our students.”

“The feedback for the new course was extremely positive and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the taster session. In fact, the girls liked it so much they were invited over to train at Shrewsbury Town with girls’ team coach, Alex Jones, this week.”
