A Bridgnorth Endowed student, who was nominated for a Young Good Citizen Award earlier in the year, had a surprise visit from West Mercia Police at school on Friday.
Sam Lewis, from Year 10, received his award from West Mercia’s Assistant Chief Constable, Rachel Jones, in recognition of his tremendous fundraising efforts for the British Heart Foundation.
During lockdown, the 14-year-old completed three marathons in three months to raise money for the charity after his dad, Craig, had suffered a heart attack back in 2020.
Craig survived following life-saving surgery and Sam, keen to do something to support the groundbreaking work carried out by the BHF, was galvanised into action.
Together with his dad, who was gradually building up his fitness, Sam ran and cycled for three months, clocking up the equivalent of three marathons and raising a staggering £910.
Proud mum, Sharon, was so bowled over with what he’d achieved that she nominated him for a Young Good Citizen Award, which honours young people who have overcome challenges in their own lives and have still been able to make a difference to others in their community.
Commenting on the award, West Mercia’s Chief Inspector Edward Hancox said: “It has been a trying time for everyone but there have been some outstanding contributions to the community worth recognising.”
“We know that throughout the counties we serve, there are countless young people going above and beyond to help support people; whether that be raising money for charity, arranging events or simply helping those who have had difficult time shielding throughout the pandemic.”
Congratulations to Sam on his well-deserved award!
