Last week, Year 11 students got the chance to test their finished balance bikes and skateboards, designed and manufactured for the ‘Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles’ section of the Product Design GCSE course.

Bridgnorth Endowed School pupils are among the first in the country to be able to take this popular subject, which includes researching products, writing specifications, and using the ‘iterative’ design process to produce drawings and prototypes for their customers.

After completing three design cycles, they move on to the production phase and manufacture their products before writing up their work, and evaluating the designs with the assistance of their customers.

A truly hands-on course, product design sees students learn how to design and model a small-scale drawing, and scale up their final designs to a full-size engineering drawing that is cut into working templates for use in the build.

Design technology teacher, Mr James, comments: “These techniques are used in real-life design and make situations, and help students to develop practical skills for future careers in a range of sectors.”
