DofE Expedition Finally Gets Underway

Year 11 girls on the practice expedition in Corvedale, Shropshire

Last week, Year 11 students finally got the chance to complete their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s practice expedition which had to be called this summer, due to a heatwave.

The group headed off to the beautiful valley of Corvedale on Wednesday morning and walked 30 miles over three days, carrying all their food and equipment in rucksacks.

Although the route took them through some stunning Shropshire countryside, it was navigationally quite challenging because of the many footpaths, fields and hedgerows to be negotiated.

For the most part, the weather was wonderful, but heavy rain on the second night left the students feeling tired and slightly soggy on their final day. Nevertheless, spirits remained high and the five groups successfully completed their routes.

DofE Lead, Mr Clayton, said: “Congratulations to the Year 11s who completed their practice expedition on Friday, it was a major achievement for everyone. The students are now keen to complete the other sections of the Award and prepare for the qualifying expedition in Snowdonia next summer.”
