Local hero and Bridgnorth Endowed minibus driver, Dana Power, is preparing to be a batonbearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

Nominated for his incredible fundraising efforts, which have seen him raise more than £70,000 for various charities in the past decade, Dana is due to carry the baton in Bridgnorth on Saturday 23rd July.

So far, thousands of people have taken it along its entire 294-day route, and the journey is now nearing its end with the finish in the host city of Birmingham on 28th July.

Dana commented: “I was chuffed to bits just to be nominated as a batonbearer, but to be accepted was unbelievable. I’m so grateful to everyone who voted for me.”

“Lots of family and friends have said they’ll be coming to cheer me on this Saturday and the fact that it’s in my hometown will make it an experience I’ll never forget.”

A well-known character in Bridgnorth, especially as Puff the Dragon, Dana has faced a few personal challenges in recent years. Now fully recovered from the heart attack he had back in 2020, he has a couple of minor health issues to deal with before he can get back to the business of running marathons.

Dana went on to explain: “Although my heart condition appears to be under control with the medication I’m on, two other minor problems have put a halt to my training for this year. But rest assured, I will be back running around the streets of Bridgnorth with Puff the Dragon as soon as these are sorted.”

Dana is expecting to receive the baton somewhere between New Road and Underhill Street at approximately 11.20am on Saturday 23rd July.
