War Horse Theatre Trip

Students outside the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre

On Thursday evening, the Creative Arts Department took a group of GCSE drama and music students, together with a number of theatre enthusiasts, to Birmingham Hippodrome to see the National Theatre’s production of War Horse.

Based on the well-known novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse follows the story of a young boy and his horse during the First World War.

Famous for its spectacular mechanical horse, students watched in wide-eyed astonishment as the puppeteers brought breathing, galloping and charging horses to life on stage.

The emotionally charged performance gave real insight into the hardship endured by horses and soldiers during the conflict, and by the end of the show there was barely a dry eye in the house.

Sophisticated technology and special effects allowed students to experience a truly professional theatrical production, particularly the realistically loud gunshot that had a few jumping out of their seats.

Drama teacher, Mrs Taylor, reports: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the theatre trip and students behaved exceptionally well. Thank you to all those who came and we look forward to organising more trips in the near future to broaden theatrical horizons.”
