The Old Vic’s live-stream production of A Christmas Carol brought Charles Dickens’ immortal classic to Year 7 and 8 students at a theatre event held in school today.
The play follows the original story of the miserly and solitary Ebenezer Scrooge, a businessman who hates Christmas – and anyone who loves it – and does just about everything possible to avoid the festive spirit.
With a cast of 18, starring Andrew Lincoln as Scrooge, the production is said to be the most ambitious and complicated piece of livestreamed UK theatre attempted during the pandemic so far.
The students were delighted by the performance, which breathed life into the plot as the spectacular characters came together to take part in the well-known and uplifting 19th-century tale.
Head of English, Mr Butler, said: “A Christmas Carol is part of our Year 8 curriculum and seeing a live production has been very useful for the students who have either studied it this term, or will be studying it next year.”
“In lieu of theatre trips and other extra-curricular opportunities, we hope this event has given the students an afternoon of culture and enrichment to support their learning and progress – as well as some well-deserved Christmas cheer.”
