What started with a sock ball and a basketball rebounder in a ten-year-old’s bedroom has now turned into something pretty special for Year 8 student Huwie Fellows.
Back then, Huwie spent hours shooting hoops in his room until his mum suggested he give the real thing a try with the Shropshire Warriors. After a trial, which he passed with flying colours, he officially became part of the team.
Fast forward two years, and 12-year-old Huwie is now training three to four times a week at the Warriors’ base at Telford College, playing as a point guard shooter and making a big impression.
Recently, his talent caught the attention of coach Kyle Bott, who scouted Huwie for the Basketball England Aspire Programme – one of the most prestigious talent pathways in the country. Only twelve players per age group are selected from a massive 20,000 young players involved in school and club basketball across England.
The Aspire Programme is known for shaping the next generation of basketball stars. With its three stages – Skills Camps, Super-Region Camps, and the All-Star National Tournament – it focuses on building strong technical and tactical skills for long-term success.
Huwie is now attending Aspire development camps and continues to represent his Telford club in the U13 Boys team.
Shropshire Warriors officials have praised the commitment and work ethic of the selected players, saying that the achievement highlights both individual dedication and the strength of the club’s youth development pathway.
To earn his place, Huwie has already battled through six elimination-style trials, with the next big one coming up on 22nd December.
Speaking about his journey so far, Huwie said: “I’m really proud to have made it this far. The trials are tough, but I love the challenge. I just want to keep getting better and see how far I can go.”
And if you’re wondering where his inspiration comes from – look no further than NBA legend Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors. Just like his basketball hero, Huwie dreams of making it to the NBA one day.
With his determination, talent, and the support of his club and coaches, Huwie’s journey is only just beginning, and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.
