During Year 7 music lessons, students learn about many different genres and styles, as well as mastering the art of composing and performing music.

The aim is to give all students, no matter how musical, the opportunity to foster an appreciation and enjoyment of music through involvement in creative and practical activities.

These include honing their keyboard skills and learning to create their own pieces of music using percussion and other instruments.

In groups, pupils are encouraged to perform in front of each other, which helps to build confidence, boost collaboration and develop the ability to work as part of a team.

Topics include:

  • Musical patterns
  • Simple music notation
  • Composing simple pieces of music
  • Performing using a variety of instruments
  • Gamelan percussion music
  • Marching music
  • Basic pitch and rhythm notation
  • Practicing scales
  • Renaissance music
