Mission

gcse historyThe fundamental purpose of a history teacher is to inspire students with a love of history and a fascination with the stories of the past. It is also to empower students with the confidence to study and evaluate the evidence of the past and the world around them, guided by an understanding of past events and concepts.

We firmly believe that history is not simply factual content; instead this content should be a starting point from which all of our students, no matter their ability and background, can develop the skills to find answers to their questions and encounter perspectives beyond their own.

Therefore, our mission is to inculcate key historical concepts such as cause and consequence, continuity and change, framing enquiry questions and testing hypotheses.

Students will learn how to evaluate historical interpretations, analyse sources, write analytical narratives and create structured essays in which they create and sustain an argument. We aim to equip students to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement.

Aims

The History Department aims to inspire a love of history in our students and an appreciation of its importance, using a variety of learning strategies. We want to instill a curiosity about the past, that will be carried forward into a life-long love of the subject.

We aim to ensure that History provides students with a coherent knowledge of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Through the study of History students will understand change and how the society we live in came to be. We will enable them to explore the diversity of societies and their own identity.

By learning History, pupils will understand that history is the narrative and evidence of the past and we aim to develop the skills necessary to enjoy the subject to its full and to maximise their potential in it.
