The key skills that students learn in English are speaking and listening, reading and writing. At BES, we recognise that these areas are interconnected and are taught as part of a complete course, which combines language and literature.

In Year 7, the aim is for all pupils to have a firm grasp of literary analysis and have cultivated a love of reading. They begin to think about the 'meaning' of texts and the skilful craft of writers, but are also encouraged to write creatively themselves.

Students study a range of texts, from Shakespeare to more modern books, such as Holes by Louis Sachar, which tells the story of an unlucky teenage boy who is sent to a juvenile detention centre in a desert in Texas, after being falsely accused of theft.

Topics include:

  • Understanding different text types
  • How to find information and identify characters
  • Key grammatical features and terms
  • Creative writing skills
  • Shakespeare and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
  • Writing in different formats
  • The spoken language
  • Nineteenth-century poetry and literature prose such as Frankenstein
