Design and Technology is a subject that incorporates a range of different elements, including electronics, product design and working with materials, such as metals, timbers and plastics.

Pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products, whilst learning how to problem-solve as individuals and work effectively as a team.

Projects focus on research skills, an introduction to tools and machines, graphics and drawing techniques, and working with hard materials.

In Year 7, students complete two design and technology projects. The first is a timber ‘Blox Bot’ and the second a Bauhaus-inspired clock made from plastics.

Topics include:

  • Health and safety in the workshop
  • How to use a range of hand and bench mounted power tools
  • Researching ideas and designing the end-product
  • Sketching and drawing skills
  • How to use the 2D design computer programme and creating a CAD file
  • Cutting wood to shape using hand tools
  • Cutting plastics to shape using the laser
  • Assembling the parts
  • Evaluating the design and manufacture on completion of a project
