{"id":1616,"date":"2019-02-04T17:08:12","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T17:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bridgnorthendowed.co.uk\/news\/?p=1616"},"modified":"2019-07-15T14:17:27","modified_gmt":"2019-07-15T13:17:27","slug":"student-workshop-on-university-fees-and-finance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bridgnorthendowed.co.uk\/news\/student-workshop-on-university-fees-and-finance\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Workshop on University Fees and Finance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bridgnorthendowed.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Workshop-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bridgnorthendowed.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Workshop-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bridgnorthendowed.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Workshop-2-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption>Year 10 girls exploring student finance as part of a university workshop<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Year 10 students took part in the second of a series of university workshops being delivered across all year groups at Bridgnorth Endowed School.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session tackled university fees, finance and personal statements in a move to raise aspirations and uncover the myths around these topics.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Cheek, from UniTasterDays, returned to follow up on the initial workshop, <em>Key Facts About Higher Education<\/em>, which looked at courses on offer and the university application timeline.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get to grips with the financial aspects of university, pupils worked with plastic money to guess how much student loan repayments would be, based on potential future earnings, then used response clickers to vote on potential earnings in relation to various university subjects.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a key part of the university application process, the workshop went on to explore personal statements, which present students with the challenge of summing up their skills, experience, and ambitions, using just 4000 characters.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the workshop, students were shown real examples of personal statements and given some helpful tips to start to consider their own.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UniTasterDays is a provider of aspirational university talks for schools throughout the UK, and will be working with all year groups at Bridgnorth Endowed. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sessions are delivered to small groups, to ensure students have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the interactive activities.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon comments: \u201cIt\u2019s important to make sure that young people understand student finance, in particular, as it is widely seen as the biggest barrier to university.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe impact of these sessions is really interesting as we collect before and after data using the response clickers.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe majority of students, at the start of the session, said they either \u2018were\u2019 or \u2018may be\u2019 put off university because of the cost of it, but when asked afterwards, the vast majority said they were not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Further details can be found on the UniTasterDays website \u2192 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unitasterdays.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Visit the UniTasterDays website \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, Year 10 students took part in the second of a series of university workshops being delivered across all year groups at Bridgnorth Endowed School.
