European Day of Languages Virtual Bake Off

The winning entry by Isobel Onions in Year 7

The coronavirus pandemic has placed many restrictions on school life but it did not stop pupils at Bridgnorth Endowed from celebrating the European Day of Languages, which took place on 26th September.

This year, students from all year groups were invited to take part in a virtual bake off competition by making their wonderful culinary creations at home and then sending in photos for the judging team to score.

Head of English and Languages, Mr Butler, together with Food teacher, Mrs Lowden, had the difficult task of picking the top three cakes without tasting them, instead relying on the presentation and technical skills demonstrated.

Isobel Onions, from Year 7, was announced as the winner for her magnificent cake decorated with a detailed map of Europe, crafted entirely from icing and adorned with handmade flags.

Isobel, said: “I like baking, especially cakes and brownies, and I enjoyed coming up with an idea to fit the European languages theme. It was a chocolate cake and it tasted delicious!”

About the winning entry, the judges commented: “The standard this year has been fantastic but this cake was an extraordinary effort of icing cartography and flag-based greetings from around Europe.”

“It was a brilliant construction by Isobel, who will receive house points for Rowley as well as a prize.”

Mia Campbell Spence (Year 8) took second place and was applauded for her “brilliant food colouring skills” and Evie Power (Year 7) came third with her colourful cake depicting the European Union flag.

Plus, there was a special mention to Lilly Curl from Year 9, whose Spanish cake was highly commended for its “lovely beading and very smooth and neat icing.”

Languages teacher, Mrs Porter, added: “Every year we organise events to mark the European Day of Languages, which is all about promoting language learning and celebrating the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe.”

“This year’s bake off has been a huge success and students throughout the school also had the chance to take part in a languages-themed quiz that was held during Tutor Time last Friday.”
